Switches
A Switched Ethernet link which can carry data in both directions simultaneously, doubling transmission capacity from the usual 10 to 20 megabits per second.

There are many benefits to having a switched network. Switches cut down on broadcast storms which can slow down your network. They eliminate unecessary traffic by "switching" data traffic to the appropriate port without having to broadcast to all ports the way hubs do.

A broadcast storm on a network that causes multiple hosts to respond by broadcasting themselves, causing the storm to grow exponentially in severity. This will cause the network's utilization to reach maximum capacity nearly cripping data traffic on the network.
